Media Release: Monmouthshire County Council celebrates confirmation of major rail investment in Magor with Undy
Monmouthshire County Council is delighted by the release of new information from the UK Government confirming that a major investment in a new railway station to serve Magor and Undy is right on track to be delivered.
As part of a multi-billion-pound announcement, the UK Government confirmed its support for and preparedness to invest in five new railway stations in South-East Wales.
These stations were highlighted as alternative investments when a decision was taken to cease further work on a proposed relief road for the M4 motorway. They will become key parts of the emerging South Wales Metro.
Cllr Catrin Maby, Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Environment, said: "This is such good news for Monmouthshire. Many years of work and campaigning has culminated in this announcement today. Not only that, we have now been promised that the new station for Magor and Undy will be at the front of the construction queue, with work expected to start this year.
"This is a good day for travellers, for the economy and for the environment. Rail is our most sustainable travel option and will take pressure off the road network, which is a double win".
Cllr Mary Ann Brocklesby, Leader of the Council, added: "I am so pleased to receive this news. This new station has been a priority for my administration since we took office, and we have lobbied hard to reach this point.
"The real story and the real heroes are a band of committed residents in Magor and Undy. They are living proof that if you believe in something, refuse to give up despite many obstacles and stay the course, good things happen. Congratulations to each of them and to everyone else, including local councillors, who have given so much time to this - it's a good day."
