“An Observance for Commonwealth Day 2017”
The Commonwealth flag was raised above St Marys Church Magor on 13th March to celebrate Commonwealth Day.  A Civic Service was held in the church to celebrate “A Peace-Building Commonwealth” at which the Chair of Magor with Undy Community Council, Cllr Donna James was joined by previous Magor with Undy Community and Monmouthshire Council Chairs Cllr John Major and Mrs Olive Evans MBE.

The Rev Jeremy Harris led the civic service which focused on a diverse “Peace-Building Commonwealth” working in unity and looking at interfaith across the nations. Year 3 pupils from Magor Primary School and Year 6 pupils from Undy Primary School were in attendance and all received a commemorative booklet about the Commonwealth.  Also in attendance were representatives of community organisations; Brownies, Royal British Legion, The Trefoil Guild, Severnside Neighbourhood Police and members of local churches.

Cllr James said “This is the first time Magor with Undy Community Council have commemorated Commonwealth Day by raising the flag and we felt that the occasion deserved a little more, and a civic service to celebrate Commonwealth Day seemed the ideal answer”.   “It was a lovely service and so good to see the local schoolchildren taking part in the civic service.”
