Refuse Collection & Recycling
Magor and Undy have moved to a fortnightly refuse collection service for general waste, with red, purple and garden waste being collected weekly.
This change was an initiative aiming to encourage you to recycle more of the waste produced from your household, and the project has been very successful.
Red, Purple and small food waste bags are available from the Caldicot One Stop Shop, Farthings Estate Agents Magor Square, and also at the Undy Farmers Market (4th Saturday monthly) at Undy Church & Community Hall.
Some time during January or February 2012 the recycling Bank for Tetra Pacs will be removed from the Withy Close Car Park. Residents have been able to recycle Tetra Paks and Juice Cartons in their Red Bag since last January 2011. This has been so successful, that the County Council are now able to save money by removing the recycle bank facilitiy for tetra Paks. Just a reminder too, that shredded paper can also be included in you red recycling bag.
Fortnightly Collection Dates for 2012
Red Bag and Purple Bag Recycling Service
Most households in Monmouthshire are now covered by the "Red Bag and Purple Bag" Recycling Scheme. To get you started, you will have received two rolls of red bags, two rolls of purple bags and an explanatory leaflet outlining what you can recycle in each bag. Please use the red or purple bags provided, as other bags will not get collected.
The red and purple bags are collected together, delivered to one of Monmouthshire County Council's transfer stations in Abergavenny or Caerwent, then transported onto a Materials Recycling Facility where they are sorted for recycling.
Red bags and purple bags should be placed on the kerbside by 7am on the morning of the collection but should not be put out earlier than 7pm on the evening before as it can cause an environmental hazard.
Collections take place on a weekly basis, usually one day later on a Bank Holiday.
Garden Waste Recycling Service
In partnership with Wormtech, Monmouthshire County Council offer a garden and food waste recycling service to Magor and Undy. When the garden waste is collected, it is taken to a unique in-vessel composting facility in Caerwent. Here it is shredded and composted in a sealed bunker which kills any bacteria that may be present.
All garden waste is collected on the same day as your food waste in the same vehicle. All waste should be put on the kerbside by 7am on the morning of collection.
What goes in the bags?
Garden cuttings, grass clippings, hedge trimmings, vegetarian pet waste and cardboard (except food and drink cartons). A green waste collection leaflet s available to download.
How many bags can I put out?
You can put out up to five reusable green canvas sacks or ten compostable white starch sacks per week.
Where can I get bags and sacks?
Re-usable green canvas sacks can be purchased for £1 each from various outlets. Compostable white starch sacks are available free of charge from any of Monmouthshire's One Stop Shops and other outlets.
Food Waste Recycling Service
Magor and Undy has a combined food and garden waste collection service. Food waste is recycled in the same way as your garden waste.
What goes in the caddy and the bin?
Every household has been given a small grey kitchen caddy and a blue lockable bin. The grey caddy can be kept in your kitchen for all leftover food scraps including meat and bones. The food scraps can be transferred into the blue lockable bin which should be put out at the kerbside by 7am on the morning of the collection.
The lockable blue bin can be lined with newspaper (to soak up any moisture) or with a compostable white starch sack (the ones that are used for garden waste).
Replacement food boxes can be ordered from the one stop shop (Woodstock Way, Caldicot. Adjacent to Caldicot Library).
